Dining rooms are now more desirable than home offices

Dining rooms are now more desirable than home offices despite the increase in remote working, according to a new study.

While separate dining areas have long been seen as a symbol of wealth and privilege, estate agent Purplebricks has discovered that 70% of house hunters dream of having their own for entertaining. In fact, dining rooms are now more sought after than ensuite bathrooms (64%), offices (55%) and kitchen islands (48%).

On top of that, additional features of the dream property include garages (79%), an open-plan kitchen (77%) and a guest bedroom (73%). Unsurprisingly, large gardens were also on the list, with almost half of Britons (49%) wanting ample outdoor space.

“Reuniting with friends and family is now a priority for many after so much time apart in recent years. Properties with separate dining rooms or kitchens with space to eat and socialize are proving extremely popular with buyers,” says James Hummerstone-Pope, divisional sales manager, at purple bricks.

“This trend is likely to continue, so those trying to sell their home may find that creating an inviting dining room will make their home more appealing.”

Elsewhere in the study, period properties were found to be falling out of favor with house hunters. We could dream of having high ceilings, cornices and classic fireplaces, but 75% of Britons say they would prefer a new build or a property built within the last 20 years. Just under 24% of those looking to move are thought to be considering period homes, such as Edwardian and Victorian buildings.
