Taste the rich flavors of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine at this Mumbai restaurant
Nikita Poojari and Narayan Poojari, owners of Shiv Sagar Food and Resort, and Managing Partners Nikhil Rochlani, Dhaval Udeshi and Pawan Shahri opened the doors to a friendly and welcoming place at One BKC. Kyma, which means ‘wave’ in Greek, promises to create a wave in its neighborhood with its relaxed interiors and upscale kitchens creating a synergy between Asian and Mediterranean cuisine.
The open-air outdoor space with cabanas and a gazebo for sitting outside with string lights and planters is reminiscent of winter European evenings. The living room with a high ceiling divides into many sections as it winds smoothly into a spacious indoor dining area.
Chic sofas and soft interior lighting were inviting enough to sit comfortably on the one with a glimpse of tree-lined avenues from the floor-to-ceiling windows. A well-stocked bar invites drinkers to sample perfectly prepared spirits and cocktails. A private dining room with balcony and a sushi bar are added bonuses here.
The food is an amalgamation of the Orient and the Mediterranean – the latter is not only pleasant to the taste, but is also considered to be one of the healthiest. We started with a delicious tomato truffle soup and a crispy watermelon feta salad with arugula, nuts and a drizzle of olive oil.
For appetizers, the falafel served with hummus, lemon tahini toum (Lebanese garlic sauce) with sips of a fruity mocktail of mango and mint pulp was soothing. The captain suggested we try fiery wonton nachos, which was a decent dish consisting of a bowl of wonton and vegetables in a chili garlic sauce served with fried nachos. Middle Eastern manakeesh with zataar or Arabic spices sprinkled with baked-smoked vegetables with olives and cheese can be enjoyed with relish at any part of the meal. The healthy avocado hummus pita is worth a try for its buttery taste and freshness.
You can rarely escape Asian preparations as they are included on the menu of most restaurants. Fans of oriental cuisine will love the water chestnut edamame with wasabi, salmon cream cheese with truffle and sushi with jalapenos, wontons and assorted dimsums. We also indulged in trying Chinese dishes like Honey Chilli Lotus Stem, which consisted of oversized lotus root shavings covered with honey, chili and a sweet and spicy sauce. Butterpea Rice Kyma’s special vegetable tempura envelops asparagus and avocado tempura, with crispy flakes sprinkled over the sushi. The chilli basil wok rice was a balance of spices and tasty jasmine rice.
As expected for a Mediterranean restaurant, I was hoping and just as happy to find baklava on the dessert menu. The pairing of crispy filo loaded with pistachio syrup and saffron sugar with scoops of rose petal ice cream was a delightful sweet finish!
