The Bristol Press – Lou & Mo’s Sandwich Shoppe brings upscale deli concept to Berlin Turnpike
BERLIN – Lou & Mo’s Sandwich Shoppe celebrated its grand opening on Monday as the latest company to settle in Berlin.
“It’s always great to have another new business, another new food establishment, in town on the Berlin toll motorway,” said Mark Kaczynski, mayor of Berlin. “You have an incredible track record so I know you will be very successful. ”
The store includes all types and styles of sandwiches.
“A lot of our menu is deli style, so in a way we are a deli, but I like to think of ourselves as more upscale,” said Luis “Lou” Febus, co-owner and managing member.
Lou & Mo’s Sandwich Shoppe is owned by Febus and Maureen Mulvey.
“We thought the apostrophe was our trademark with the flying sandwich, so people remembered us and we really wanted it to be ours and people to know it’s us,” Maureen said. “Mo »Mulvey, co-owner and manager. member.
They were looking for spaces in West Hartford and Avon, but Febus went through this new development, saw the “for rent” sign and fell in love with it.
“We have always been huge fans of the Berlin Turnpike. We live in Southington, but we come here and do a lot of shopping and dining, ”Febus said. “Once we saw what was happening here and saw photos of the building, it just spoke to us – it was almost like it had to be,” Febus said. “It hardly happened many times, but the broker loved us, loved our concept and our menu from the start. Our owner, John Orsini, felt there was a great need for this type of establishment in this area, so he fought for us.
The duo signed the lease for the space at 196 Berlin Turnpike in July and construction began shortly after. Construction took about three months and ended in early October.
Mulvey said she enjoys working with the city.
“In the business side of things, they take pride in who they are and what they stand for and want everyone to be successful and want to be heavily involved. It’s a community that is holding on and has its moral compass and that was important to me, ”she said. “We couldn’t ask for an easier transition to something new so we’re very lucky. ”
The restaurant offers fresh local produce daily, prepared to order.
“Our concept is quick and easy where you pay when you first get here and then sit back, relax and wait for your food,” Mulvey said. “We use recipes that have been made within our families and hope everyone likes them – they are very special.”
Mulvey said The Steak Bomb, which is Febus’ recipe, is a fan favorite and his too. The Black Jack Brisket sandwich, which is named after Mulvey’s father, is also popular.
“It’s really a big store, and you can tell it’s going to be successful by the fact that they just opened at 11 am and the line was already out for lunch,” said Bill Moore, president of the Greater New Britain Chamber. “It’s exciting and it’s great for Berlin with a small business going into the midst of a pandemic and adding 12 jobs to the economy.”
In addition to on-site meals and take-out, they also offer catering services.
Febus is originally from a downtown western Massachusetts and moved to Connecticut about 12 years ago. He started in the restaurant business at the age of 14.
“I grew up very poor so working hard has always been an option for me,” he said. “The work ethic was a big part of what brought me here.”
Mulvey was born and raised in Southington. She did her graduate studies in Providence, Rhode Island, in hotel and restaurant management at Johnson & Wales University.
“I studied for a few years and then I worked at Legal Seafood where they taught me how to be a manager and all about service and food and guests and really how to be an owner. I was also fortunate enough to work for Max Restaurant Group, they really taught me an owner mindset and perspective. They taught me to believe in myself and take it to the next level.
Febus and Mulvey have been together for 12 years, are engaged, have children and now have a business together.
